NODA Review by Ralph Thomas

A warm welcome at the Paget Rooms was much appreciated, when our Regional Councillor Mr. Brian Sullivan joined me for a delightfully produced A Little Night Music.

Under the guiding baton of Mr. Dave Thompson, Sondheim's wonderful score was in fine hands. A three-piece keyboard ensemble created the right ambiance for this cleverly scripted piece. The set was extremely well dressed and utilised fully. The Liebeslieder singers, (Mark Windsor, Nigel Holloway, Linda Cleak, Claire Couldridge and Cat Bailie) were in fine voice and exuded a stage presence which kept this show tripping along with just the right amount of flamboyance.

This truly was an outstanding demonstration of an ensemble working as one, under some great direction. There were great performances from Paul Buckle (Frederik), Sarah Chew (Anne), James Rockey (Henrik) and Hayley Toms as Petra. Hayley's rendition of "The Miller's Son" was a showstopper!

Simon Riordan (Carl-Magnus) was in fine voice as always, and his long-suffering devoted wife was a fine foil played by Lorna Welch. The Armfeldt household was well represented by Tia Peachey (Fredrika) and James Osborne as Frid. Janet Holloway (Madame Armfeldt) is such a talent and it was a pleasure to see her back in the glow of the footlights giving us a wonderful rendering of "Liaisons".

Now then, this production's most famous offering must be "Send In The Clowns"! As this production reached its crescendo Ellie Hoare silenced an already mesmerized audience with an incredibly well sung and acted portrayal of this number.

Ellie is a very strong performer with an outstanding voice, and she certainly deserved a standing ovation and calls for more, accolades that were hysterically distracted by the perfect timing of Henrik entering with a hangman's noose, a little theatrical magic!

Now about that theatrical magic, the director Ruairidh seems to grow in reputation and stature with everything that he touches, great direction and interpretation along with a splendid awareness of stagecraft...well done!

Sondheim they say is like Marmite, however Sondheim presented so skilfully is sheer nectar! Thank you Concept.
