NODA Review by Dee McIlroy
A rollicking band of pirates dropped anchor
in Abergavenny with one of the most popular of the Savoy operas
to the delight of Concept Players loyal following. An innovative
and interesting production played with enthusiasm, this company
is exceptional and totally versatile. Also their strong vocals
were ideal for this production with some fine singing throughout
from all the principals and ensemble. Ellie Hoare made a divine
Mabel keeping the audience spell bound with her singing and
great sense of fun especially by the shore scene, ‘How
Beautifully Blue the Sky’. There were many highlights including
‘Stay Frederic Stay’ with impressive scenes created.
Her romantic partner Frederic was also very well played and sung by James Osbourne. We all wait for the entrance of the Pirate King (Kristian Zgorzeski) and this one with his golden voice, brought great comedy as he sashayed around the stage
Hayley Toms was the prettiest and most glamorous Ruth I have ever seen, and why not, there is never just one way to see a role, a very good interpretation of the character with great facial expressions. Major General Stanley, Kevin Morgan, showed us just how he put that tongue twister patter number over. Excellent! Stephen Hopkins made an excellent Sergeant of Police, Richard Thomas was a lively Samuel and a special pirate cameo was given by Ruairidh MacLeod-Lyon.
Congratulations on a well directed production, with outstanding MD, Christopher Fossey, and ever brilliant accompanist, Andrew Hopkins (Band), both making sure of perfect pace and all the dialogue heard. Creative set and efficient stage crew, lighting good, sound well balanced, also costumes by Paul Buckle/Fiona Thomas were skilfully coordinated and a true to era high standard. Thank you for your kind hospitality and every success for your play Blood Brothers in June.
